Construction is underway! The groundbreaking ceremony on September 25, 2009 was the first step in making the IFPT a reality. This followed the May 25th, 2009 announcement by the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Federal Minister of State for Science and Technology and Kitchener-Conestoga MPP Leanna Pendergast of major infrastructure funding for Conestoga College including the creation of the Institute of Food Processing Technology(IFPT). The Alliance is pleased to partner with Conestoga College to create the IFPT.
The Institute of Food Processing Technology is the culmination of a study that the Alliance of Ontario Food Processors began in 2007 with the financial assistance of the Agricultural Adaptation Council. The focus was on addressing the lack of, and need for skilled workers in the Ontario food and beverage processing industry.

The multi-phase project continues. The end results provide benefits well beyond the food and beverage processing sector. A competitive and successful food and beverage processing sector is important for Ontario farmers that rely on this sector to process more than 70% of what is grown and produced, and to rural communities that depend upon this sector for employment and taxation. As a mainstay of the manufacturing sector in this province, a competitive and sustainable food and beverage processing industry is critical to the province’s well-being. The impact of doing nothing to address the skills shortage in the food and beverage processing sector will undermine the sector's ability to be competitive and hence, have a negative impact upon farmers, rural communities and the province. |
